Brunswick was declared a municipality in 1857. The Town
Hall was built in 1876, and is an imposing Victorian building
in the Second Empire style. The Town Hall is host to the
annual Brunswick Music Festival, and also contains
the Counihan Gallery and the Brunswick branch of
the Moreland City Library.

MECHANICS
INSTITUTE PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE

Concert Seating capacity: 160 unreserved
Diagonally opposite from the Town Hall is the Mechanics'
Institute, built in 1868, and used for education and
social activities. A monument to the Free Speech fights
of the 1930s stands near the corner. The building was
acquired by the Brunswick City Council in 1927 and for
many years served as the Brunswick Municipal Library.
The building is now home to the Mechanics Institute
Performing Arts centre, and boasts a fully equipped
community theatre space. It is also the administrative
home of the Brunswick Music Festival.

an old space into a new, multi-purpose venue on the corner
of Union Street and Sydney Road in the cultural heart
of Brunswick. Phoenix Public House has opened its doors
for eating, drinking and tunes. The band room features
ample sightlines, great acoustics and two bars. Its
versatile enough to host a diverse range of events, including
international artists and local acts.
