FROM
THE MAYOR
This year the Brunswick Music Festival
celebrates its 20th anniversary. We will celebrate this milestone
by presenting an artistic program that showcases a wealth
of musical talent from around the world. One of the highlights
of the 2008 program will be performances featuring musicians
from Xianyang, our sister city in China. Moreland City Council
will welcome a delegation of artists from Xianyang who will
explore the art and culture of China through music and dance.
These artists will also perform during the Sydney Road Street
Party and in other venues around Moreland.
Council has for many years supported a community weekend
prior to the Brunswick Music Festival concert series. This
year we are very happy to welcome back the Victorian Concert
Orchestra (VCO). The VCO is one of Australias longest
serving touring orchestras and will be performing a repertoire
that includes classical and popular music at a free concert
at the Coburg Town Hall.
The vibrant and popular Sydney Road Street Party will occur
on Sunday 24 February. This year, Council will implement a
local law that prevents the consumption and possession of
alcohol outside of licensed areas on Sydney Road for the duration
of the street party. We see this initiative as helping to
keep the event a safe and enjoyable one for all members of
our community.
We cannot forget the significance of funding and sponsorship
support in presenting the Brunswick Music Festival. Alongside
the long term support of the Australia Council for the Arts,
we acknowledge the continued support of Yarra Trams, Macconn
Electrical and the Fairfax Community Network. In 2008 we welcome
a very important new sponsor Australian Hearing.
As you can see the 20th Brunswick Music Festival will again
present an eclectic and diverse program featuring excellence
in musicianship, exciting performances and innovative artistry.
I encourage you and your family and friends to take the opportunity
to attend a world class music festival here in our City.
