THE LOUIS McMANUS
MEMORIAL CONCERT
Louis McManus: 1956-2004
2011 marks the 23nd anniversary
of the Brunswick Music Festival, and over those 23 years, no-one
has captured 'the heart and soul' of the Festival more than the
late Louis McManus. Louis lived in Brunswick for more than ten years
and this was his 'home-town' festival. It was fitting then, that
he played such a major role in the 1st Brunswick Music Festival
way back in 1989. Louis would go on to play at the Brunswick Music
Festival with either the The Purple Dentists or the Leisure Twins
each and every year until illness forced him from the stage. The
Annual Louis McManus Memorial Concert, presented as a part of
the Brunswick Music Festival, is an opportunity to celebrate the
music and the friendship that we all shared with Louis.

Memorial Concert brings together two of the most innovative acoustic
guitarists in the world folk idiom.
TONY
McMANUS
Scots born and now Canada based, Tony McManus is known throughout
the world as the leading guitarist in Celtic Music. Through Tony's
hands the emotions of Celtic music are transferred to the guitar and
the listener is drawn into the driving energy of a reel or the timeless
atmosphere of a lament. His engaging personality on stage has taken
him to five continents and his contribution was recently recognised
with a Gold Medal voted by the readers of Acoustic Guitar magazine
- fellow recipients were John Williams, Paco de Lucia and Tommy Emmanuel.
His latest album The Makers Mark is a unique recording where
he performs selections on 15 handcrafted guitars where alongside his
lifelong love of Scottish and Irish music, he explores harmonies from
South Africa, to the strange scales and rhythms of Eastern Europe.
MARTIN SIMPSON Martin Simpson is an Englishman who has spent 35 years as a
professional musician and who is part of that great lineage of English
acoustic folk stylists beginning back with Davy Graham, continuing
with Martin Carthy, Nic Jones and so on. Widely acknowledged as one
of the finest acoustic and slide guitar players in the world, his
interpretations of traditional songs are masterpieces of storytelling,
and no-one has more successfully combined the diverse elements of
British, Afro-American and old-timey music than him. Martin has been
nominated an astounding 23 times in the eleven years of the BBC Radio
2 Folk Awards - in 2010 he had an unprecedented 6 nominations for
his CD, True Stories.
