MARY GAUTHIER
Alt-country singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier exploded on to
the scene in 1999 following her self-released sophomore effort, Drag
Queens in Limousines. The album had critics comparing her self-described
'country noir' to the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, John
Prine, and, not surprisingly, Lucinda Williams. Embraced by critics,
folkies, and No Depression fans alike, Gauthier's warmly candid treatment
of her fringe-dwelling subjects rings true, as it never verges on
sentimental; her characters' downtrodden lives are never coldly exploited.
Acclaim has followed Mary Gauthier on every step of her remarkable
journey. Her major breakthrough album came in 2005, Mercy Now was
continuously 'discovered' and lauded for the two years following its
release, earning mentions on a score of year end 'best of' lists.
Her most recent release, Joe Henry-produced Between Daylight and Dark
(2007) has been called "a triumph that should catapult her to
the forefront of Americana singer/songwriters," hailed by the
Los Angeles Times as "a unique, intrinsically valuable musical
voice". And there's never a surplus of those.....
TRACY McNEIL
Canadian country-roots singer songwriter Tracy McNeil arrived
in Melbourne in 2007 with only a suitcase and her highly acclaimed
debut solo album Room Where She Lives. Tracy soon found herself in
a creative frenzy that has yet to stop. Teaming up in 2008 with Melbourne
songsmith Jordie Lane, she formed the successful old-time country
duo Fireside Bellows. Their debut release No Time To Die
received rave reviews across Australia. Tracy is now returning to
her solo material with a fresh new band and pocket full of songs to
be released in early 2010. Each one is beautifully crafted and sung
with a wonderfully expressive voice, authoritative, forceful and soft
in the right places. Full to the brim with imagery, McNeil's songs
forge a lasting imprint on the hearts of the listener. View
